天長地久。

Heaven endures and earth is lasting.

Der Himmel ist bleibend und die Erde dauernd.

天地所以能長且久者。

And why can heaven and earth endure and be lasting?

Himmel und Erde können deshalb bleibend und dauernd sein,

以其不自生

Because they do not live for themselves.

weil sie sich nicht selbst leben.

故能長生

On that account can they endure.

Darum können sie bleiben und dauern.

是以聖人後其身而身先。

Therefore the holy man puts his person behind and his person comes to the front.

Daher: Der heilige Mensch setzt sein Selbst hintan, und sein Selbst kommt voran;

外其身而身 電。

He surrenders his person and his person is preserved.

Er entäußert sich seines Selbst, und sein Selbst wird bewahrt.

非以其無私邪。

Is it not because he seeks not his own?

Ist es etwa nicht so, weil er nichts eigen hat ?,

故能成其私。

For that reason he can accomplish his own.

darum kann er sein Eigen vollenden.
