大道氾兮。

How all-pervading is the great Reason !

其可左右。

It can be on the left and it can be on the right.

萬物恃之而生。而不辭。

The ten thousand things depend upon it for their life, and it refuses them not.

Alle Wesen verlassen sich auf es, um zu leben, und es versagt nicht.

功成不名有。

When its merit is accomplished it assumes not the name.

Ist Verdienstliches vollendet, nennt es dies nicht sein.

衣養萬物。而不爲主。

Lovingly it nourishes the ten thousand things and plays not the lord.

Es liebt und nährt alle Wesen und macht sich nicht Herr.

常無欲。可名於小。

Ever desireless it can be classed with the small.

Ewig ohne Verlangen, so kann es klein genannt werden.

萬物歸焉。而不爲主。

The ten thousand things return home to it. It plays not the lord.

Alle Wesen kehren sich (zu ihm), und es macht sich nicht Herr,

可名爲大。

It can be classed with the great.

so kann es groß genannt werden.

以其終不自爲大。

Therefore, the holy man unto death does not make himself great

Daher: Der heilige Mensch macht sich nie groß,

故能成其大。

and can thus accomplish his greatness.

darum kann er seine Größe vollenden.
