爲學日益。

He who seeks learnedness will daily increase.

Wer lernen tut, nimmt täglich zu;

爲道日損。

He who seeks Reason will daily diminish.

Wer Tao tut, nimmt täglich ab,

損之又損。以至於無爲。

He will diminish and continue to diminish until he arrives at nonassertion.

nimmt ab und wiederum nimmt ab, um anzulangen im Nicht-Tun,

無爲而無不爲。

With non-assertion there is nothing that he cannot achieve.

«Nicht-Tun, und doch bleibt nichts ungetan.»

取天下。常以無事。

When he takes the empire, it is always because he uses no diplomacy.

Übernimmt er das Reich, (so ist es) stets durch Nicht-Geschäftigkeit.

及其有事。不足以取天下。

He who uses diplomacy is not fit to take the empire.

Solange einer Geschäftigkeit hat, verdient er nicht, das Reich zu übernehmen.
