爲無爲。事無事。味無味。

Assert non-assertion. Practise non-practice. Taste non-taste.

Das Tun sei Nicht-Tun, Das Geschäft. sei Nicht-Geschäft, Der Genuß sei Nicht-Genuß,

大小多少。

Make great the small. Make much the little.

Das Große sei Kleines, Das Viele sei Weniges.

報怨以德。

Requite hatred with goodness.

Vergeltet Feindschaft mit Wohltun.

圖難於其易。爲大於其細。

Contemplate a difficulty when it is easy. Manage a great thing when it is small.

Plant das Schwere in seinem Leichtsein, Tut das Große in seinem Kleinsein.

天下難事。必作於易。

The world's most difficult undertakings necessarily originate while easy,

Die schwierigen Geschäfte der Welt beginnen ja mit Leichtsein,

天下大事。必作於細。

and the world's greatest undertakings necessarily originate while small.

Die großen Geschäfte der Welt beginnen ja mit Kleinsein.

是以聖人終不爲大。

Therefore the holy man to the end does not venture to play the great,

Daher: Der heilige Mensch tut nie das Große,

故能成其大。

and thus he can accomplish his greatness.

darum kann er sein Großes vollenden.

夫輕諾必寡 信。

As one who lightly promises rarely keeps his word,

Wer leichthin verspricht, hält sicher selten.

多易必多難。

so he to whom many things are easy will necessarily encounter many difficulties.

Wem vieles leicht ist, wird sicher vieles schwer.

是以聖人猶難之。

Therefore, the holy man regards everything as difficult,

Daher: Der heilige Mensch behandelt es als schwer,

故終無難矣。

and thus to the end encounters no difficulties.

darum wird ihm lebenslang nichts schwer.
