民不畏死。奈何以死懼之。

If the people do not fear death, how can they be frightened by death?

Now to take the place of the executioner who kills

是謂代大匠 斵。

is taking the place of the great carpenter who hews.

夫代大匠斷者。

If a man takes the place of the great carpenter who hews,

Wenn man anstatt des Zimmermanns behaut,

希有不傷其手矣。

he will rarely, indeed, fail to injure his hand.

bleibt selten die Hand unverletzt.
